The Nissan Xterra uses Nissan F-Alpha platform which is also used in the manufacture of Nissan Frontier pickup.

Nissan’s Advanced Air Bag System (AABS) includes standard dual-stage supplemental front air bags that incorporate seat belt sensors and an occupant-classification sensor. The inflation rate of these dual-stage air bags adjusts depending on crash severity and seat belt usage. If the front passenger seat is empty, a sensor will deactivate the bag. In addition, front seat-mounted side-impact supplemental air bags are built into the seats, so they move with you as you adjust your seating position.
